BYOBs in Chicago

Variations On A Theme

There are a number of different types of BYOB restaurants in Chicago. I believe you will find it useful to understand the variations and why they exist as you navigate this domain. Most BYOBs only allow Beer and Wine, but a few will allow hard liquor and even offer mixers to you for your beverage of choice.

Temporary BYOB - with zero or minimal corkage fee

Opening a new restaurant is challenging in the best of circumstances - getting a liquor license in Chicago can be particularly arduous. As a result, frequently when a new restaurant opens they do so without having achieved that worthy objective. So while they are waiting for that approval process to grind through its paces - they offer the option for their patrons to bring their own bottle of vino or ale. It is important to call ahead to verify they are still BYOB when visiting one of these venues as their status could change at any time. They frequently allow a grace period - but still it is best to call ahead.

There is now a newcomer to this designation - some restaurants that already offer a full bar are offering a "BYOB Night" - one night of the week where they allow people to bring their own. This is is at the restaurant's whim - clearly a marketing tool being used in these tough times to bring in more business.

Permanent BYOB - with zero or minimal corkage fee

A restaurant cannot get a liquor license when it is located within 100 feet of a library, church, school (K-12). So they fall into what I consider to be "permanent BYOB”.

Permanent BYOB - with a substantial corkage fee (Approx $15)

Some restaurants with full bar service also offer BYOB, however the corkage fee can be prohibitive say $15.00 for a single bottle.
